As the oldest holiday resort on the island of Lanzarote, Puerto del Carmen has recently undergone something of a facelift. After forty years of welcoming tourists, major refurbishment of the seafront has been completed recently.
Now the main avenue that runs behind the beaches of the resort has been turned into a one-way single lane road, giving much more space to pedestrians and cyclists. The intention being to create a more inviting space for visitors to use as they stroll along the seafront.
The wider pavements have extended the leisure facilities so that families who have been enjoying the golden sandy shoreline are able to wend their way towards their Lanzarote accommodation easily. Not least because there is less danger to children from local traffic that has been so dramatically reduced.
Whether they are staying in an apartment close to the centre or in one of the holiday villas in Puerto del Carmen, the changes are a welcome addition to the resort. And match more closely the laidback pace at which holidaymakers want to operate during their sunshine break.
In the heart of the Old Town, there are also changes afoot, with the harbour currently undergoing expansion. The new look it will enjoy in future years will be more in keeping with the modern facilities found at Puerto Calero and Marina Rubicon.
And should also attract a different type of visitor, in the form of yacht owners looking to berth their vessels along the south-eastern coast. A greater number of excursions will also be able to operate from the larger pontoons without crowding out local fishermen.
The final piece of the jigsaw will see the introduction of more uniform shop fronts on the seafront promenade. As the current mixture of facades are remnants from the 1980’s when much of the resort was developed. So it is hardly surprising they need to be refreshed.
Naturally enough, much of the tourist accommodation has been renovated and refurbished in recent years for much the same reason. In order to be able to compete with other tourist destinations many Lanzarote hotels have been adding new facilities and giving their establishments a thorough overhaul.
Amongst the most popular amenities to be added in recent years is the spa and wellness centre. The vast majority of these are thelassotherapy spas, which use seawater for its beneficial affects on both the skin and muscles.
