Current OSCE Chairmanship Expresses CIS Interests

Kazakhstan is the first Muslim country, as well as the first former SU satellite state, to hold the reins of the major intergovernmental security organization OSCE. According to Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev, the OSCE chairmanship holds a symbolic and historic significance for the organization. Kazakhstan’s outstanding foreign relations will make the country an ideal mediator for several international conflicts.

The new OSCE leadership also expresses the mutual interests of the CIS countries according to Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko. The president recently held a meeting with the current OSCE chairman, Kanat Saudabayev. The Kazakh state secretary and foreign minister agrees with Nursultan Nazarbayev regarding his statement that Kazakhstan was given its position as OSCE chairman to represent the CIS nations. As a member of the Commonwealth of Independent States, Belarus announced its support for the priorities that were set by Kazakhstan.

Hoping for the full implementation of Kazakhstan’s priorities, Belarus claims that it has always been an advocate of the Kazakhstan OSCE chairmanship. According to President Lukashenko, the Organization of Security and Cooperation in Europe is currently struggling with an issue regarding positions, and Belarus assures its full support for Kazakhstan in working out solutions for this challenge.

In response to this, Kanat Saudabayev invited the Belarus president, in behalf of the Kazakhstan president, to attend this year’s OSCE summit in Astana. The OSCE chairperson says that an informal session of the OSCE Council of Foreign Ministers will be held in Almaty in the summertime in order to formulate and finalize the upcoming Astana summit.

Kanat Saudabayev adds that although an air of ambivalent attitude towards the summit’s agenda prevails inside the organization, everyone in the group agrees with the importance of holding the meeting. Additionally, Saudabayev also placed an emphasis over the unity among CIS member states by citing the recent CIS Council of Foreign Ministers in Moscow.

A trip to the Edinburgh Festival

Last year my band got a lucky break. We were seen playing in London one night and asked by a promoter to go up and play at the Edinburgh festival! It was a very big deal for us because the night we were playing would be broadcast later on that night on Radio 2! It was the first interest that we had ever had from anyone other than your typical promoter that wants you to come and play down at the dog and Duck. On top of that it meant that we would be able to go and watch all of the other great things that the Edinburgh Festival had to offer. I had always wanted to watch the stand up comedians performing up there, because it is generally where you see all of the up and coming artists make their breakthroughs. People like Peter Kay had come through the festival to Super stardom so the chances were that we would see some future stars!

The only problem we had was transport. We had no motor vehicle to use so we decided to investigate the idea of flying up there. I managed to find some flights to Edinburgh online and after calling up the company I discovered that we would not have to pay too much for our equipment supplement. We all had flight cases for our equipment so this seemed like the best thing to do.

The performance was a great success, and the rest of the festival was fantastic. Nothing ever came of playing up there but it was a great experience and it was amazing to listen to our performance live on the radio in our hotel room that night!
